The Instagram generation are really starting to take over. Forget your regular common or garden off-roader that focuses on wading depth and hill-descent control. What’s the point in scaling muddy paths and tackling tricky terrain if you can’t put it on the internet afterwards for all to see?

Toyota is on to this. At the LA motor show it’s shown off the Future Toyota Adventure Concept (catchily known as the FT-AC), which isn’t just a super tough, super specced mud machine. Sure, it may be ultimately engineered for “expeditions” on and off-road, but the highlights of the FT-AC are built-in cameras and WiFi that lets you stream your journey live, or capture footage for instant editing, meaning you don’t even have to get of out the car to perfect your Snapchats. There’s an infra-red camera for middle-of-the-night fun times, and it automatically sends recorded footage into the cloud.

There’s a long wheelbase, wide track and high ground clearance to give it that rugged look, with a black front grille flanked with LED headlamps – the fog lights can be detached and used portably for those late-night close-ups, too. It gets all-wheel drive with torque vectoring and variable terrain response, and is finished in the toughest of tough colours, army green.

Jack Hollis, Vice President and General Manager of North America’s Toyota Division, said, “No matter the roads, the activities, or the people, FT-AC sparks authentic fun and conversation.”

But who wants a conversation nowadays? It’s all about the impromptu iPhone snaps and behind-the-scenes footage. Mind, it might not just be for amateurs like us – this tech could easily be used to get genuinely adventurous footage from far-flung places online. We’ll get our best poses ready just in case, though…
