43702 vision g coupe concept

This is the Hyundai Vision G. It is a concept, and one that features a 420bhp, 5.0-litre V8 under the bonnet. It is, says Hyundai, the future.

But power isn't the key, here, it's the design. Sketched out with input from Hyundai's design studios across the world but led from the US, this Vision G is said to focus on the "notion of chivalry". Eh?

In this case, said chivalry takes the form of a pillarless, two-door monster coupe. One with an enormous grille, huge alloys and a very, upmarket-looking 'slingshot profile'. One that's rather delightful, too.

And yet despite all of this – and that V8 and self-opening doors that operate "like a valet" – the Vision G is supposed to be all understated luxury.

Hyundai CEO Peter Schreyer states that, despite the concept's size and lines, "you don't need to be over the top in terms of glitz and stereotypical luxury cues".

Chris Chapman, head of Hyundai's US design centre and the man who led the design on this Vision G, says: "In keeping with a design that speaks to the owner rather than the spectators who might see the car on the road, Vision G appears dynamic and in constant motion."

If you're in California this weekend at Pebble Beach, you might be able to see it in motion too. Has Hyundai moved far enough upmarket to make a two-door super-coupe-thing for real?
