After a near seven-year hiatus, Japan’s longest-running premier touring car championship, the Autobacs Super GT series, returns to Malaysia this year at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC).

The event’s official announcement took place this week during a special press conference jointly held by event promoters Haro Sports & Entertainment and the GT Association Ltd of Japan – Super GT’s parent company.

Malaysia will host Round 5 of the Autobacs Super GT 2020 championship, standing as the series’s second overseas venue outside Japan this year besides the Chang International Circuit in Buriram, Thailand.

Notably, Super GT’s return to SIC this year will go into the history books as the series’s first ever night race event. Things are scheduled to kick off from Thursday, 16 July with the race itself set for Saturday, 19 July.

To refresh your memory, Super GT runs a two-driver endurance format with race distances ranging from 300km to 1,000km. There are two competition classes racing simultaneously, those being the premier GT500 class that’s effectively exclusive to works teams, and the secondary GT300 class fielded mostly by privateer outfits.

Notably, the Malaysian leg sees the entry of local drivers Jazeman Jaafar and Datuk Adrian da Silva as wildcards in the GT300 class. The local racing wunderkid and multi-year local racing veteran will pair up and race a Porsche 911 GT3 R under the Earl Bamber Motorsports banner.

On-track racing action aside, Super GT Malaysia Festival 2020 will also feature a supporting Auto Expo event organised by the folks from Art of Speed Malaysia. This will be held in SIC’s Mall Area and will feature a wide array of displays by leading manufacturers, automotive brands, after market specialists, lifestyle products, car clubs and enthusiasts.
