Upcoming hybrids from Hyundai will have faster gearshifts

Hyundai has developed a new transmission technology they call Active Shift Control (ASC). What it does is provide faster shift times by monitoring gear shifts 500 times a second and adjusting the transmission rotation speed. It’s be available in the upcoming Hyundai Sonata Hybird and other upcoming hybrids from Hyundai and Kia.

The tech uses a new control software to the Hybrid Control Unit which uses an electric motor to align rotational speeds of engine and transmission. Not only does this reduce shift times but also contribute to smoother gear changes. Durability of the transmission is also improved as friction during gear changes are minimised. Hyundai says that shift time is reduced by 30 per cent, or from 500ms to 350ms.

The usual issue in hybrids is that the gearbox lacks a torque convertor in order to get better fuel consumption. The drawback, however, is that gear changes become slower. This is where ASC comes in, and constant monitoring of transmission rotational speeds ensure that speed is maximised.

Just a few weeks ago Hyundai introduced CVVD (Continuously Variable Valve Duration) technology which improves performance, fuel economy and gives cleaner exhaust emissions by controlling valve duration.
