Sepang Racing Team to run as 'separate entity' from SIC

The Sepang Racing Team (SRT) will be its own entity away from SIC going into MotoGP 2022

Following the shocking news that Petronas will be ending its sponsorship for the Petronas Sepang Racing Team (SRT), we have yet to hear or know anything from the man who started it all, Dato' Razlan Razali. It seems that SRT will be its own entity separate from the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) going into the 2022 MotoGP world championship season.

This bit of news was confirmed by the CEO of SIC himself, Azhan Shafriman Hanif (more popularly known as Shaf), during an online media session. He also stated that Dato' Razlan is currently working very hard to rebrand SRT as well as looking for a new sponsor for the squad going into the 2022 season.

A lot of questions pertaining to the SRT's team status have been left for Dato' Razlan to answer soon, which he will in the coming weeks. So far, he's been keeping everything in the dark, but we will soon have a clear picture once everything is set and done. This also includes the decision to axe its Moto2 and Moto3 efforts to focus only on MotoGP.

As for the reasoning behind the ending of sponsorship from Petronas, Shaf stated that the discussion started from the beginning of the year where the option to continue was already on the table from SIC's side.

There are obviously several reasons why this decision was made, but the ones that were mentioned were:

  1. Petronas achieved in getting their lubricants utilised and tested in the Yamaha MotoGP bikes
  2. They've re-evaluated their portfolios & decided that they've 'achieved what we set out to do' with the SRT collaboration

There are still a lot of uncertainties and questions left unanswered, but for those to be cleared up, we will just have to wait for the official decision from Dato' Razlan Razali himself. Hopefully, we won't have to wait that long.
