Second-gen Mercedes-Benz GLA lands in Malaysia

The three-pointed star’s compact cars range gets updated locally following the arrival of the second generation Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class.

Launched virtually this morning by Mercedes-Benz Malaysia (MBM) were two variants of the A-Class’s crossover SUV offshoot, those being the GLA 200 Progressive Line and the GLA 250 AMG Line.

At the heart of the GLA 200 is a 1.3-litre 4cyl turbo heart that outputs 163hp and 250Nm. Driving the front wheels through a 7-speed DCT box, 0-100kph is dispatched in a respectable 8.7 seconds, with Merc claiming an equally decent fuel economy range of 5.6 to 5.9 litres/100km here as well.

The GLA 250 benefits with a larger 2.0-litre mill instead, as well as higher outputs of 224hp and 350Nm. It also gets paired with an 8-speed DCT and 4MATIC all-wheel-drive (AWD), thus allowing 0-100kph done in a quicker pace of 6.9 seconds whilst sipping just 6.5 – 6.7 litres/100km on average as well.

Like the A-Class hatchback (and booted ‘Limousine’) it underpins, both variants introduced today come brimmed with Merc’s novel new MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) voice-enabled infotainment controls and the Mercedes me connect suite presented via a fully digital dash display panel.

Whilst the GLA-Class stands slightly shorter than its predecessor on the outside, Merc has enlarged its cabin space, promising enhanced legroom and luggage space. The latter is bolstered now with the presence of a height-adjustable load floor feature, thus granting greater practicality and versatility with the 40:60 split folding rear seats retained.

Another area of improvement is safety, with the GLA 250 in particular now benefitting with a heightened Blind Spot Assist feature that works at standstill to signal drivers of oncoming danger (including bicycles) before alighting from the car. This, by the way, comes on top of various other driver assistances present such as Active Brake Assist.

Slotted below the GLB-Class launched not too long ago, the new GLA-Class range is now available at authorised MBM dealers nationwide where it commands RM244,199.82 (GLA 200) and RM285,336.66 (GLA 250) until 31 December 2020. Said figures raise up to RM252,888 and RM295,888 respectively (with SST) come 1 January 2021.
