Proton managed to close 2021 with a total sale of 114,708 units

2021 was yet another tough year as we head closer to COVID-19 recovery, but it seems that the recovery also affected Proton's overall sale numbers. With 14,147 units successfully delivered last month, Proton closed its 2021 sales book with an impressive 114,708 units successfully sold both for the domestic and export markets.

This happens to be Proton's highest volume closing figure since 2014 and the decision to bring in SUVs into the line-up greatly contributed to this success. In 2021 alone, Proton sold 45,149 units of the Proton X70 and X50 models which accounted for close to 40% of its total sales volume last year. Over 28,000 units were for the X50, but the Saga remains strong with a whopping 42,627 units (export figures included).

Below is the breakdown of Proton's total sale volume for 2021.

  • Proton Saga - 42,627
  • Proton X50 - 28,774
  • Proton X70 - 16,375
  • Proton Persona - 16,153
  • Proton Iriz - 6,708
  • Proton Exora - 4,035

According to Mr. Roslan Abdullah, CEO of Proton, "2021 was tough for the automotive industry as a whole and this is reflected in the reduction in TIV compared to the previous year. From a global chip shortage to a spike in Covid-19 numbers that lead to another lockdown to skyrocketing transport costs, there were many challenges for industry players to overcome. That is why Proton’s sales growth in a year where the market contracted is significant as it is the result of careful planning and juggling of available resources."
