Porsche has flipped its 5G communications network to the 'ON' position

Porsche has jumped onto the 5G bandwagon after announcing that its Weissach Development Centre has switched on its 5G standalone network this week. This latest tech will offer real-time mobile communications with 'with immediate effect for vehicle development at the site'.

In cooperation with Vodafone, Porsche plans to extensively upgrade its comms network by offering secure and instantaneous transmission of data between car, human, and machine. In other words, all future models from Porsche will be 5G-ready and as you all may already know, 5G is significantly faster than the current LTE (also known as 4G).

According to Hannes Ametsreiter, CEO of Vodafone Germany, "With 5G standalone we have brought Europe’s fastest network to Weissach, and therefore enable new digital services for the cars of tomorrow. 5G is revolutionising the development of vehicles – from the first prototype to the finished series model. In the future, Porsche engineers will be able to work on digital vehicle models and prepare them for use on the road. Starting in Weissach, 5G is moving directly into the cars on our roads."

The advantages of 5G in the automotive industry can be massive when done right. Porsche will be looking into the development of future pre-emptive warning and assistance systems that'll hopefully make the drive a much safer experience. Warnings can be sent straight to the driver, like road hazards or accidents within the vehicle's route or journey.
