Porsche Taycan and DMC DeLorean get together to celebrate Back to the Future day

Tenuous? Maybe a little. But who are we to knock Porsche jumping on the opportunity to make the most of Back to the Future day?

21 October presents a prime chance to learn just how much a Taycan Turbo S has in common with a DeLorean. Only one has stainless steel bodywork, and only one has 761bhp channelled through all four wheels for a 2.8sec 0-100kph time.

Nope, the similarity is that both can claim to harness 1.21 gigawatts of power. It’s how much electricity the DeLorean time machine needs to shoot wantonly backwards and forwards in history, and comes courtesy of a plutonium-fuelled nuclear reactor.

And it’s how much electricity Porsche has calculated North America and Europe’s combined Electrify and Ionity charging networks (comprising almost 5,000 chargers) can squeeze into a Taycan EV.
