It’s just under a year since Sime Darby Auto Performance launched the 911 GT3, and now, the edgier, faster, lighter RS version is also now officially available. This hardcore version of at the already-intense 911 GT3 is – in Porsche’s own words – closer to the made-for-racing 911 RSR or 911 Cup than a road car.

Just like any race car, the exterior is just as noteworthy as the engine: the wheel arch vents function to reduce overpressure in the wheel arch, wider front lip and side skirts to increase the RS’ underbody surface area, and wider rear wing all contribute to the improved aero. Now, the car makes 144kg of downforce at 200kph, or 75kg more than the GT3’s.

To get lighter, the GT3 RS is generous with use of exotic materials, including aluminium-steel composite. Sound absorption materials are minimised, rear screen and side windows are all lightweight glass (not polycarbonate though, because glass is far more resistant to scratches), and the roof is magnesium.

Let’s talk engine now. The car features the most powerful naturally aspirated engine Porsche has ever made. We’re talking about a 4-litre flat six engine that makes 520hp and 470Nm, 20hp and 10Nm more than before. All goes to the rear-wheels through a standard 7-speed PDK. Yes, unlike the GT3 which does offer a manual box’ option, the RS is automatic only. Any complaints about that is easily clouded once you hear this motor go to its 9,000rpm peak.

The 911 GT3 RS’ pedigree is underlined by the chassis which features ball joints on all arms for greater precision. There is also a Clubsport package option at no extra cost and this gets you a rollover bar, manual fire extinguisher, six-point harness, and battery disconnect switch.

The Weissach package is available too, of course. This brings even more weight reduction with additional carbon components to the interior, exterior, and chassis. The package brings the weight down by 17kg to the ‘standard’ 1,430kg.

Starting price for the 911 GT3 RS is RM2.23 million with duties, not including road tax and insurance. Warranty is for four years.
