MotoGP to continue racing at Sepang until 2024
The Malaysian MotoGP round will also have a new title sponsor - Petronas!
Dorna Sports together with the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) has agreed that the MotoGP race will continue to race right here in Malaysia until 2024. In fact, all parties are already in talks of possibly extending that agreement until 2026, but from now until the end of 2024 are already set in stone.
The surprise kicker for this announcement is the MotoGP Malaysian round's new title sponsor - Petronas! From this year onwards, the Malaysian MotoGP round will be known as the Petronas Grand Prix of Malaysia, taking its place from Shell which has been the title sponsor for the past several years.
This comes as no surprise considering that Petronas is already in partnership with Dorna Sports as the official fuel supplier for all the bikes lined up on the Moto2 and Moto3 grid. Just like Shell, we can expect good things coming from the Petronas camp as we edge closer to the Malaysian MotoGP round scheduled to take place at the end of October.
According to Azhan Shafriman Hanif, CEO of SIC, "I am pleased to inform that we have concluded my first negotiation on the contract extension with Dorna Sports as the Chief Executive Officer of Sepang International Circuit and I would like to extend my gratitude to those who have made this possible. With record-breaking crowds year on year, we look forward to welcoming the fans back to Sepang after a two-year break due to the pandemic. In line with our #WelcomeHome theme, this year is about the revival of international motorsports with more unique offerings to the fans."
