It was officially launched by Transport Minister, YB Anthony Loke just moments go and puts a focus on small and medium enterprise (SME) commercial vehicle owners start, train and sustain safety driving habits among their drivers using vehicle telematics.
The programme is supported by the Ministry of Transport, JKJR and MIROS and is open to all SMEs from today until 31 December 2019 and is powered by iFleet, the telecommunication company’s fleet management solution which provides real-time vehicle and driver behaviour information.
There are three initiatives to help with the Digi Road Safety Programme, namely a RM10 million iFleet Transformation Fund where 1,000 SMEs will receive up to RM10,000 each in discounts to equip their fleet with GPS tracking, Wi-Fi and video capabilities. Drivers will also be trained by defensive driving professionals. The cost of this training is entitled to a 15 per cent discount and is 100 per cent HRDF claimable. Third, the 10 safest drivers from each qualifying SME will be rewarded with Digi prizes based on their iFleet driving scores for the month.
In his speech during the launch, YB Anthony Loke said, “Even though current road safety statistics has improved, yet there is still more we can do to curb fatalities and serious injuries. Technology can be effective for better enforcement, implementation of interventions and safety compliance on roads; and telematics could help improve road safety and build trust in road users; in this case, commercial vehicle drivers.”
Using vehicle telematics, information about vehicles and drivers can be sent, received, and stored using devices connected o the internet. This technology can be used to improve road safety by monitoring driver behaviour, collecting vehicle data such as locations, speed, acceleration, braking and cornering. This will help the commercial vehicle owners and drivers to make more informed decisions to improve vehicle safety on the road, which is key to the Digi Road Safety Programme 2019.
