Mercedes-AMG E 63 S launched in Malaysia

Mercedes AMG E 63 s 4MATIC 1

The just-launched Mercedes-AMG E 63 S 4Matic+ is one reason why superlatives exist. In case you have not been briefed, here are the important ones:

  • Up front is a twin-turbo, 4-litre V8
  • 612bhp between 5,750 – 6,500rpm
  • 850Nm, 2,500 – 4,500rpm
  • 0-100kph in 3.4 seconds

Let’s not forget that this is a 4-door sedan, a Mr. Hyde version of the regular E-Class’ Dr. Jekyll. Only that the Mercedes is able to be both without help of a secret potion. Not when you have AMG on your side.

The car’s exterior looks tauter with help from 27mm wider wheel arches to fit larger wheels and wider tract. Also altering how the E-Class looks is the new radiator grille, wider front apron, large front splitter, rear apron with diffuser insert, and trim strip in Night Package on the rear apron.

Tyre size is 265/35/20 at the front and 295/30/20 rears.

The twin turbos in this hand-built AMG engine is located in between the cylinder banks, resulting in a more compact construction with more immediate throttle response.

To produce the output it has, the engine features new pistons, optimed air intake, plus extensive software changes. Intrestingly, the V8 also feature cylinder deactivation during partial-load conditions, thus improving engine efficiency. Mercedes claims a combined fuel consumption figure of between 9.1 to 8.8 litre per 100km.

The all-wheel drive 4Matic system gives full variability of torque distribution on the front and rear axles, ensuring optimum traction. In simpler terms – RWD to AWD depending on condition, and with seamless change between the two using an electromechanical coupling. An electronic rear diff also helps the driver to inject power earlier out of corners.

The “Race” mode will interest many, because it’s also called the Drift mode. It’s when ESP is deactivated entirely and the transmission goes to manual shifting. Naturally, only the rear-wheels are engaged.

The AMG Speedshift MCT nine-speed transmission is tuned to be quicker and offers double-clutching function for more emotive gearshifting experience.

Suspension
Mercedes AMG E 63 s 4MATIC 6
This is based on the Air Body Control with three-chamber air suspension. During sudden load changes, fast cornering, heavy acceleration or hard braking, the spring rate is also automatically made harder on the front or rear axle. This reduces roll and pitching effectively and stabilises the performance saloons.

Interior

Of course, a fair share of AMG badges welcome the driver/passenger. The two front sport seats has more lateral support in a few optional finishing colour/material. Highlights include a nappa leather covering for the instrument panel and beltlines, the sports steering wheel with crystal grey 12 o'clock marking and contrasting topstitching, AMG crest in the front head restraints and IWC-designed analogue clock.

There’s more, and it’s called the new AMG TRACK PACE App. Tick this in the options list and you can use it to analyse and improve their track driving style. The COMAND Online infotainment system transmits all vehicle data – including speed, gear, steering angle, time, position and temperature to the app in real time.
