Most Malaysians would normally end the year with celebrations, parties and fireworks, but automotive group Mcclubz wanted to celebrate the end of 2016 the car enthusiast way – with an ultimate automotive event.

So they crafted together Speed Junkies 2016 on the last Friday of 2016 with the objective of combining two popular elements of local car culture, a Trackday Session with an Autoshow.

Held at the Sepang International Circuit, the Trackday Session attracted 210 cars for the four sessions on the day. The sessions were split into a four-hour morning slot and the remaining ones into two-hour sessions in the afternoon. There was a good mixture of European marques (BMW, Mercedes-Benz, VAG) along with JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) machines and local models (Proton and Perodua). Also present were Lotus Cars Malaysia (with Lotus Club Malaysia), Wing Hin Autohaus, and Goodyear to support the Trackday. Professional drivers Tengku Djan, Mervyn Nakamura, and Mark Darwin were present to give taxi rides to the media and public.

The Autoshow was equally impressive, with 220 cars on display. Various makes, models, and tuning disciplines were on show, ranging from pristine models to classic cars to stance. A selection of show cars by Mcclubz was placed in front of the Mcclubz Merchandise booth, including fan favourites like the RWB Porsche and “Hakosuka” Skyline. A team of celebrity judges – Tengku Djan from Lotus Malaysia, Remus Supremus from Motorsport Playground, and MTC Racer Geraldine Read from Team Dream Chaser – selected the favourites in each vehicle category.

Speed Junkies 2016 attracted 3,000 visitors, proving that there is strong support for our growing local car culture. A fleet of food trucks, consisting of Flaming Wheels, Cowboys Food Truck, Black Kitchen Food Truck, Wheeloaf, Western Jams, and Burger Giler Power, was present to keep everyone hydrated, well fed, and satisfied. Not a bad way to end 2016.
