Last we heard, Polestar was being split off as a separate marque to deliver wondrous stuff like the Polestar 1 hybrid sports car. Seems it can’t resist tinkering with Volvos, though, and its latest mod is very interesting.

Volvo’s describes it as “Polestar-developed software upgrade that increases torque distribution to the rear wheels of Volvo cars equipped with all-wheel drive, for more dynamic driving.” In the layman’s terms we need, Polestar’s making Volvos more fun.

Polestar will also sharpen the throttle, quicken the gearshifts and add a bit more power, too. But it’s the ability to lob more power at the back wheels that you’ll likely feel most. It’s accessed via flicking the car into Dynamic mode, or switching off the stability control. Volvo’s words. Yep, it really is letting its hair down.

It’s available on all petrol and diesel engines on just about every new Volvo saloon, estate and SUV. Yep, even the sensible little Volvo XC40 crossover. We’re suddenly itching for another go…
